The LiFePO4 version of Lithium batteries are super safe. They’re significantly better than lead-acid batteries in every possible way. Much longer lasting, much better able to deal with high discharge and inconsistent charge cycles, don’t suffer from sulfation (the main killer of lead-acid batteries), and as we said, they’re even safer.
The only barrier until now was price. They still cost more than lead-acid batteries of course but they really do last a lot longer and deliver far more consistent power. So they work out cheaper when you take that into account. You might have to replace a lead-acid battery 3 or 4 times in the time that a Lithium battery lasts.

Pros and who needs this :
It‘s (by far) the cheapest option.
It feels like it shouldn’t be. There are some major advantages to using a multiple battery bank (as we’ll go on to discuss), compared to one big battery. And yet, the one big battery option can be as much as 2 or 3 times more expensive, and even beyond that. So why is it the case? It’s basically market economics. The 12V 200Ah battery market is, as you may expect, much bigger than the 24V 200Ah battery market. Therefore, there are more sellers ie. more competition for the 12V models, so price comes down. 24V battery sellers keep their prices high, since there’s less competition. So if you go for the double 12V option, you’re reaping the benefits of this price gap.
Very large number of series/parallel connections are possible (hence, the best battery bank expansion potential)
By which we mean, you can build a really large battery bank system, if you so wish. Up to 5 connections in series, and unlimited connections in parallel. Moseworth LiFePO4 batteries have this over many other Lithium battery brands, even big brands, that are limited to just one or two series or parallel connections.
Very strong power delivery
We were really happy with how much power it produced, and the power remained stable over time, even up to very high levels of discharge. We tested it with an 850W heater and it powered it for several hours with no issues. This battery can handle a lot and still keep going.
All round high competence
As far as our testing goes, the Moseworth battery matched or exceeded the performance of other, more expensive brands. It’s specs are on a par, and build quality is good too. The BMS provides the same level of protection; that is: short circuit, over-current, overcharge, over-discharge, low temperature, high temperature. And, in fact, you’ll find that other top brands have BMSs have the surprising lack of over-temperature protection. Not so, the Moseworth.
Cons and why this model is not for you:
You have to connect the batteries together
This is the only real disadvantage of connecting the 200Ah batteries in series to make a 24V system, as opposed to a single 24V 200Ah Lithium battery. A small initial investment in cabling and the time to put them together. Neither of these are major issues, though.

LiGen 200Ah 24V Lithium LiFePO4 Battery
Pros and who needs this :
It has genuine ability to deliver the power stated (without damage).
Well of course it can, right? Well, you say that but it’s likely that no battery you’ve ever had before has even been close. That’s because it’s very likely you’ve been using lead-acid batteries. And they’re recommended to only be discharged to 50%. If you went much above that, you probably damaged the battery. So in reality, you only had 2560Wh of power to safely use. This LiGen is a high quality Lithium battery, with top notch BMS. That means you can discharge to near 100% without damaging it (90-95% may be best though!). So you’re getting very near 5120Wh of power with each and every full charge. That’s a hefty chunk of power you can store. And then consider how little self-discharge there is…
Self-discharge is very low
The LiGen 200Ah 24V battery loses only 3.5% per month on self-discharge. So it holds its charge really well. Three whole months without using it, and it’ll still have around 80% of its power intact.
Solid power delivery even until 90% discharge
We found it kept a steady stream of power even when charge was getting really low. Only in the 90% plus range did voltage drop, and even then it wasn’t cutting our completely in the same way we’ve experienced with lead-acid batteries at a much lower level of discharge. All in all LiGen have excellent quality high-powered batteries; they also have the best 300Ah Lithium battery on the UK market.
It’s not *that* heavy and not *that* big
It feels strange to be saying that 42kg isn’t heavy. But when you consider even a 200Ah battery at 12V is 55kg, fully 13kg more, you realise that actually it’s not bad at all. Heck of a lot lighter than an equivalent lead-acid battery, that would be at least double the weight – pretty much unusable! And as for size, it’s really not that much considering the power you get. To get the equivalent power with several 12V lead-acid batteries connected together, you’re looking at a massive increase in space, at least 3-4 times more space would be taken up.
IP55 protection significantly boosts your chances of a long lifespan
If you don’t know what IP55 protection means, it’s protected from limited dust ingress; and low pressure water jets from any direction. That doesn’t mean it’s completely waterproof and dustproof, but it’s a really solid level of protection. If a battery’s going to last a decade and even up to 15 years, it’s great to have this.
Cons and why this model is not for you:
It’s a costly beast
A beast it is, but a costly one at that. It’s a significant investment. Just bear in mind the longevity of the Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) type of Lithium batteries in your calculation. You’re very likely to get at least 10 years of usage. With lead-acid batteries, you’ll get a few hundred cycles, with quality Lithium batteries, you’ll get many thousands of cycles, even as many as 5-6 thousand and beyond potentially. And take into account the fact that you can discharge to 95%, meaning you’ll get plenty more power on each cycle. 5000Wh of power on each cycle, and thousands of cycle over more than a decade? Weigh up if that power is worth the investment for you.
The Victron battery (our No.3) is higher quality
The Lithium cells used by the Victron battery are the best on the market. And BMSs (Battery Management Systems, which monitor the battery) is Victron’s specialty, with many years of development. LiGen’s Lithium cells and BMS are high quality too, but they can’t quite match Victron.
Allows for only a few batteries to be connected
Two in series and two in parallel, to be precise. That’s not bad and will be plentiful for most people. But if you’re looking to build a fairly large battery bank, then you’re limited in total system size with LiGen 200Ah 24V batteries.

You have far more leeway with charging
Lead acid batteries must be fully charged or they’ll be damaged. If you don’t charge them to 100%, they suffer from sulfation, which limits the charge the battery can take on, and hence reduces the power. But the Lithium cells in the Victron 24V 200Ah battery don’t suffer from this “memory effect”. You can charge them as much or as little as you like, and they’ll stay healthy.
Unlimited parallel connections
While the LiGen battery is limited to two parallel connections, the Victron 24V battery can be connected to an unlimited number of batteries in parallel. So you have more options to build a system with much larger output.
You get superior Victron build quality
Victron are certainly one of the highest quality manufacturers in the world. Their products have exceptional reputation for reliability and longevity. And their LiFePO4 batteries are no different. Their Lithium cells are of the highest grade, and the BMS is one of the most developed on the market.
Copes well with all charge/discharge cycles
One of the true tests of the quality and longevity of a battery is how well it copes with uneven, staggered charge-discharge cycles. Most batteries can cope quite well if you always charge to 100%, then discharge to 80%, then immediately recharge to 100%. And so on. But the true test is when you leave it in a discharged state for a while, then don’t fully charge it, it just gets some topped up charge from solar, for example. That’s where the Victron battery shined in our testing; it still offered really solid power and relatively high voltages even at low charge levels. We therefore expect it to cope well with real-life, less than perfect usage and still last for a long time.
Cons and why this model is not for you:
Protection only to IP22 level
That means it’s significantly less protected than the LiGen battery, our No.2. It’s protected only to fingers and objects greater than 12mm; and water spray less than 15 degree from vertical. This may well not be an issue for you, it just depends where you’re going to be keeping it, whether it’s somewhere very dry and fairly dust-free or not.
It’s around double the price of the LiGen battery
Weigh up the investment. Is building large systems with many batteries connected in parallel worth the extra money? The superior quality of Victron’s Lithium cells and BMS? (Victron do have the highest quality batteries on the market)
No integrated BMS
You’ll need to buy a BMS to work with it, and you do need to. It’s not safe to operate the battery, or charge or connect to other batteries in a bank without a BMS. That’ll set you back another £100-250.
